Woodworking does not have to be expensive. These are the cheapest wood options that still produce great results.

Construction Lumber (2x4s, 2x6s)

At ~$4–6 per 8ft board, construction lumber is the cheapest option. It is not pretty β€” expect knots, warp, and rough surfaces β€” but for painted furniture, workbenches, and shop projects it works perfectly. Sort through the pile at the hardware store and pick the straightest, most knot-free boards.

Whitewood / Spruce-Pine-Fir

Sold as whitewood at big-box stores, this is the cheapest dimensional lumber that comes pre-planed on all four sides. Good for shelving, simple furniture, and any painted project.

Plywood

A 4×8 sheet of 3/4″ cabinet-grade plywood (~$50) gives you enough material for a large bookshelf or cabinet box. Strong, stable, and dimensionally consistent β€” far better than solid wood for large flat surfaces.

Where to Find Cheap Wood

  • Offcut bins at lumber yards β€” often 50–70% off
  • Facebook Marketplace β€” people sell leftover project wood cheaply
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStores β€” donated lumber at steep discounts
  • Construction site offcuts β€” ask the site foreman, they often give it away
