Every woodworker needs a solid work surface. This simple bench uses standard 2×4 lumber and basic screws β€” no complex joinery, no special tools. It is sturdy enough for real work and cheap enough that a beginner can justify building it before they have built anything else.

Materials (for a 6ft bench)

  • 8x 2x4x8 studs (~$32)
  • 1x sheet of 3/4″ plywood for the top (~$12)
  • 3″ construction screws (1 box)
  • Wood glue

Dimensions

Height: 34″ (standard workbench height). Top: 24″ deep x 72″ long. Lower shelf: 12″ from the floor.

Key Tips

  • Double up the top β€” two layers of plywood glued together makes a rock-solid surface
  • Add a lower shelf for tool storage using a third piece of plywood
  • Check for square at every stage before driving screws
  • Bolt it to the wall if possible β€” it will never move again
