A wooden toolbox is a rite of passage for beginner woodworkers. It is useful, simple, and teaches you the most important skills: measuring accurately, cutting straight, and assembling square. Here is the simplest version that actually works well.
Cut List (all from 1×6 pine)
- Two sides: 5.5″ x 12″
- Two ends: 5.5″ x 9″
- Bottom: 9″ x 12″
- Handle: 1″ dowel, 13″ long
Build Steps
- Cut all pieces to size
- Drill a 1″ hole centred in each end piece, 1″ from the top edge
- Thread the dowel through both end pieces
- Screw the sides to the ends (pre-drill to avoid splitting)
- Attach the bottom with glue and screws
- Sand everything smooth β pay attention to the handle for comfort
- Finish with a coat of Danish oil or leave it natural
Total cost: ~$18 in materials. Build time: 1.5β2 hours.
