A wooden toolbox is a rite of passage for beginner woodworkers. It is useful, simple, and teaches you the most important skills: measuring accurately, cutting straight, and assembling square. Here is the simplest version that actually works well.

Cut List (all from 1×6 pine)

  • Two sides: 5.5″ x 12″
  • Two ends: 5.5″ x 9″
  • Bottom: 9″ x 12″
  • Handle: 1″ dowel, 13″ long

Build Steps

  1. Cut all pieces to size
  2. Drill a 1″ hole centred in each end piece, 1″ from the top edge
  3. Thread the dowel through both end pieces
  4. Screw the sides to the ends (pre-drill to avoid splitting)
  5. Attach the bottom with glue and screws
  6. Sand everything smooth β€” pay attention to the handle for comfort
  7. Finish with a coat of Danish oil or leave it natural

Total cost: ~$18 in materials. Build time: 1.5–2 hours.
