Built-in bookshelves add more perceived value to a home than almost any other DIY project. They look custom and permanent, but are built from standard plywood and pine trim. Here is how to do it.
The Basic Method
Built-ins are essentially free-standing shelf units that are scribed to the wall and ceiling, then trimmed to look built-in. You do not need to do complex carpentry — the trim does the work.
Step-by-Step Overview
- Measure your wall — floor to ceiling, wall to wall
- Build plywood box units (typically 12″ deep x whatever width fits)
- Stack and anchor units to the wall studs
- Add a face frame of 1×3 pine around each unit
- Scribe the top trim to the ceiling to close any gap
- Add crown moulding across the top
- Fill nail holes, caulk all gaps, prime and paint
The Secret to the Professional Look
Caulk and paint. Even gaps of 1/4″ disappear under a bead of paintable caulk and a coat of trim paint. Take your time on this step — it is what separates a DIY look from a built-in look.
