A floating bed frame creates a dramatic visual effect β the mattress appears to hover above the floor. The secret is a base that is slightly smaller than the platform above it, keeping the legs hidden from view.
How the Float Effect Works
The platform (mattress surface) overhangs the base by 3β4″ on all sides. The base sits on small feet or recessed legs that are invisible from normal eye level. The result is a mattress that appears to float.
Materials
- 3/4″ cabinet-grade plywood for the platform top
- 2×4 framing for the internal box structure
- 1×4 hardwood (walnut, oak, or ash) for the outer wrap
- 4x black metal hairpin legs (6″) for the recessed base
The Walnut Wrap
The most impressive finishing detail: wrap the platform edge with a 1×4 hardwood band. Mitre the corners at 45Β°, glue and brad-nail in place. The contrast between a dark hardwood wrap and a light wall is striking.
