A treehouse is the ultimate backyard build. It requires more planning than a ground-level structure, but with the right approach it is achievable for a first-time builder. Here is how to do it safely.
Tree Selection
Choose a single healthy hardwood tree (oak, maple, or ash) with a trunk diameter of at least 12″ and no signs of disease or major dead branches. Avoid fruit trees β they are not structurally strong enough.
Attaching to the Tree: TABs
Treehouse Attachment Bolts (TABs) are the safe, professional method. A single TAB (about $30 each) can support 4,000+ lbs and allows the tree to move without cracking the platform. Do not use multiple bolts per side β it girdles the tree and causes long-term damage.
Simple Platform Design
- Two TABs in the main trunk, supporting two main beams (2×8 or 2×10)
- Secondary joists at 16″ OC across the beams
- 3/4″ exterior plywood decking
- Perimeter railing β non-negotiable for safety
