A rustic coffee table is one of the most popular first furniture projects. The style forgives imperfect cuts, the material cost is low, and the result looks intentional rather than beginner. Here are the plans.

Cut List

  • Top: 3x 2x6x48″ (glued or screwed side by side)
  • Legs: 4x 4x4x17″ (for a standard 18″ coffee table height)
  • Apron: 2x 2x4x40″ (long sides) and 2x 2x4x10″ (short ends)

The Rustic Finish

The finish is what makes a rustic table. Try this: sand to 120 grit only (skip 220 β€” you want texture), apply a coat of Minwax Dark Walnut stain, wipe off after 5 minutes, then seal with two coats of wipe-on poly. The slightly rough surface absorbs stain unevenly, creating a naturally aged appearance.

Distressing (Optional)

Before staining, beat the wood lightly with a chain, drive random screw holes, and drag a wire brush along the grain. These marks look like decades of natural wear once stained.
