A step stool is one of the most useful things you can build for a child — it gives them independence at the bathroom sink, kitchen counter, and bookshelf. Here are plans for a safe, solid 2-step design.

Dimensions

  • Base: 14″ wide x 12″ deep
  • Bottom step: 5″ above floor
  • Top step: 10″ above floor
  • Total height: 10″

Cut List (all from one 1x12x6′)

  • Two side panels: 12″ x 10″ (with notch for steps)
  • Bottom step: 12″ x 14″
  • Top step: 12″ x 14″
  • Back brace: 3″ x 12″

  • Apply non-slip rubber feet to all four base corners
  • Apply non-slip mat or adhesive grip tape to both step surfaces
  • Sand to 220 grit and seal with a child-safe finish
  • Test with your full body weight before letting children use it
